Waterline Toronto runs free events for rationalists, effective altruists, and the curious out of Toronto's west end on Sunday afternoons. We welcome people of all ages, genders, orientations, and species. Events are posted on the pages below, and in the Discord.1

Two event series run on alternating Sundays:
Waterline
Waterline is the core event series for discussion of central rationalist and EA concepts and how they collide with everything else. It is open to anyone who is interested in attending and willing to do the readings.
It is expected that attendees complete the readings2 before attending and come prepared to discuss them. There is no expectation that you agree with the readings. There is a strong expectation that discussion vibes remain good.
Please feel free to come hang out even if you feel awkward about it, are new to the community, not like “the typical rationalists/EAs”, not an "IRL meetups" kind of person, worried people won’t like you, are part of TPOT, or have no idea what some of those words are.
Content at Waterline is moderately biased away from AI safety, as Trajectory Labs runs regular events on the topic.
Grotto
Every city with enough rationalists and EAs will develop inner rings with private events. Grotto is an experiment in creating an unusually legible medium onion ring for Toronto, hopefully without too much ensuing drama.
Grotto events allow established rationalists and effective altruists to collectively explore a wider range of topics together. Examples include foundational texts of other intellectual communities, contemporary culture war topics, and what it's like to go to the art gallery with a bunch of fellow autists stemlords nerds.
To receive an invitation, become known at Waterline or other open spaces in the regional ecosystem3 as a thoughtful discussion participant. If you're visiting from another city, get your organizer to intro you, or have a legibly rationalist/EA online presence.
Waterline regulars who engage well should typically be invited to Grotto within a few months. Invitations are ultimately at organizer discretion; if you're wondering where you stand, ask.
You will need to attend an in-person event to get the Discord password.↩
Generally there are 2-3 required pieces. We try to keep the total word count below 5,000 words.↩
Examples include Applied Rationality Toronto, Trajectory Labs, KW Rationality, Montréal LessWrong, and Rational Ottawa.↩
